About GBE Energy
Founded in 2013, GBE is an energy trading firm specializing in the electricity markets of North America. Our expertise lies at the intersection of fundamental analysis and risk management. With offices in Calgary and Metro Vancouver, our team has decades of collective market experience, consistently delivering positive returns by successfully navigating the most dynamic and volatile commodity in the world.
The electricity grid, the most complicated machine created by humankind, is in constant flux. Current day is no different, as increased electrification trends continue to power our collective futures. As our transportation, industrial processes, and computing requirements demand ever more power, the work is simple but demanding: in this domain of constant change, find value where others haven’t.
Electricity markets never stop. Prices change every five minutes, shaped by shifting demand patterns, unpredictable weather, supply uncertainty, and transmission constraints. At GBE, analysts drive decision-making by transforming their insights into actionable strategies.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for ambitious Energy Trading Analyst Interns to join our Calgary and White Rock teams. This is not a theoretical internship. This is an in-office opportunity, where participation on the trade floor is essential. The pulse of the market is a necessary ingredient in the creation of insights and understanding energy fundamentals in real time. Your insights will feed into real-time decisions in North America’s most competitive power markets.
If you’re eager to apply your analytical skills in a high-stakes, real-world environment, competing against some of the smartest minds in industry, GBE offers the platform to make it happen. And with a clear pathway to a career in trading.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct daily market analysis, focusing on the supply, demand, and grid dynamics that drive price volatility.
- Execute daily paper trading using our proprietary platform, testing your strategies in conditions that mirror actual electricity markets.
- Monitor real-time energy prices, demand forecasts, and market trends to provide actionable insights to traders.
- Collaborate with analysts, meteorologists, and traders to identify opportunities, supporting the development of trading strategies.
- Develop your own trading strategies leveraging GBE’s suite of proprietary tools and datasets, gaining hands-on experience in turning data-driven insights into action.
- Actively contribute to daily trading floor conversations and decision-making.
What We’re Looking For
- Recent graduates or students in their final year of Economics, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Finance, or related fields.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Street smarts and resilience, with the capacity to handle high-pressure situations.
- Proficiency in Excel, Python, SQL, or other data analysis tools.
- Demonstrated interest in trading, markets, and competitive environments.
- Experience in competitive sports, poker, trading, crypto, or other performance-based disciplines is an asset.
What We’re Offering
GBE has successfully navigated shifts such as the transition from coal to gas-fired electricity, weather volatility, the rise and market penetration of wind, solar, and battery technologies, and the ever-evolving demand patterns driven by data centers and electric vehicles. As an intern, you’ll learn not just from current market dynamics but also from how our team has navigated successfully through past transitions — lessons that remain critical as the grid continues to evolve.
Daily Direct Mentorship: Work side by side with experienced traders and analysts in a collaborative environment. You’ll see firsthand how experienced traders continually adapt their strategies to market shifts, maintaining an edge in an unforgiving environment.
Development and Training: Complete electricity domain training modules, providing the foundation for fundamental analysis.
Real Market Impact: See how your analysis shapes trading strategy and risk decisions in real time.
Conversion Pathway: Standout interns are fast-tracked into full-time analyst roles after graduation. Out of the GBE Futures 2025 internship class, 4 of 6 team members were offered full-time roles, while the other two are returning for additional four month terms.
How to Apply
Submit your resume and a brief cover letter explaining your demonstrated passion for trading. Typos and authenticity are preferable to lazy LLM prompts.
