About GBE Energy
Founded in 2013, GBE Energy is an energy trading firm specializing in the electricity markets of North America. Our expertise lies at the intersection of fundamental analysis and intensive data analysis, underpinned by a firm focus on risk management. With offices in Calgary and White Rock, our team has decades of collective market experience, consistently delivering positive returns by successfully navigating the most dynamic and volatile commodity in the world.
The electricity grid is in constant flux. As computing requirements and industrial processes continue to surge, power demand is also increasing at a rapid rate; in this domain, it is your responsibility to find value where others haven't.
Electricity markets never sleep, and prices change every 5 minutes, shaped by dynamic demand patterns, unpredictable weather, supply/generation uncertainty, and transmission constraints. At GBE, analysts drive desk decision-making by transforming their insights into actionable trading theses and strategies.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for ambitious Energy Trading Analyst Interns to join our Calgary and White Rock teams. This is a hands-on opportunity with decision ownership, where participation on the trade floor is essential to your growth. Feeling the pulse of the market is how you build insights into grid and market fundamentals.
If you’re eager to apply your analytical skills in a high-stakes, real-world environment, competing against the smartest minds in the industry, GBE offers the platform to make it happen.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct daily market analysis, focusing on the supply, demand, and grid dynamics that drive price volatility.
- Execute discretionary views using our proprietary paper trading platform, testing your strategies in conditions that mirror highly volatile electricity markets.
- Monitor real-time energy prices, demand forecasts, and market trends to provide actionable insights to traders.
- Collaborate with analysts, meteorologists, and traders to identify opportunities.
- Develop your own trading theses, personal or team tools, and trading strategies by leveraging GBE's suite of proprietary tools and datasets.
- Actively contribute and share views to the trading floor.
What We’re Looking For
- Students and graduates in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or related/technical fields.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Street smarts and resilience, with the capacity to handle high-pressure situations.
- Proficiency in Excel, Python, SQL, or other data analysis tools.
- Demonstrated interest in trading, markets, and competitive environments.
- Experience in competitive sports, poker, trading, crypto, or other performance-based disciplines is an asset.
What We’re Offering
GBE has successfully navigated shifts such as the transition from coal to gas-fired electricity, weather volatility, the rise and market penetration of wind, solar, and battery technologies, and the ever-evolving demand patterns driven by data centers and electric vehicles. As an intern, you’ll learn not just from current market dynamics but also from how our team has navigated successfully through past transitions — lessons that remain critical as the grid continues to evolve.
Daily Direct Mentorship: Work side by side with experienced traders and analysts in a collaborative environment. You’ll see firsthand how experienced traders continually adapt their strategies to market shifts, maintaining an edge in an unforgiving environment.
Development and Training: Complete electricity domain training modules, providing the foundation for fundamental analysis.
Real Market Impact: See how your analysis shapes trading strategy and risk decisions in real time.
Conversion Pathway: Strong performers are fast-tracked into full-time analyst or associate trader roles.
How to Apply
Submit your resume and a brief cover letter explaining your passion for trading. If you use LLMs to write your cover letter, include your prompts at the end of your letter.
GBE Energy is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and inclusion in our hiring.
